What is whiplash?

Whiplash is the term used to describe an injury to the neck, caused by a sudden and violent movement of the head either backwards, forwards or sideways and most commonly occurs after a road traffic accident where a victim has been ‘rear ended’.

Whiplash can also occur if someone is involved in a sudden impact or is violently pushed or knocked over resulting in the head moving in a way where the tendons and ligaments in the neck are overstretched or damaged.

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

Clients with whiplash injuries will often complain of neck pain and find that their neck has become stiff. A whiplash injury may cause victims to struggle to turn their head easily and in severe cases, they may not be able to turn their head at all.

The most common symptoms of whiplash will usually develop within 6 to 12 hours after an accident and can include:

  • Neck pain
  • Stiffness of the neck
  • Reduced movement of the neck
  • Inability to move the neck
  • Pain when turning the head
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Jaw pain
  • Back pain
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle spasms in the arm/shoulder and/or hands

Many people will often suffer from some of the effects of whiplash immediately after the injury and symptoms and pain are known to get gradually worse within the first week of the injury, occasionally leading to more ongoing health problems. If any or all of these symptoms have presented themselves after your road traffic accident, you may be entitled to make a whiplash compensation claim.

Are there any longer term effects?

Fortunately, in most cases, the effects of whiplash will eventually subside. However in some cases people have been known to suffer pain and discomfort for as long as six months – in some cases longer. This is known as chronic whiplash.

Whiplash injuries can have long lasting effects, resulting in a myriad of problems such as chronic pain and a decrease in movement for an extended period of time, not to mention social, financial and emotional problems.

In one of our recent whiplash compensation claims, our client’s whiplash injuries did not settle as expected after a minor rear end shunt. Even two years after the accident, our client was experiencing back and neck pain, facial discomfort, tinnitus and she was diagnosed with psychologically mediated chronic pain syndrome. Our whiplash claims solicitors secured £35,000 compensation.

Chronic neck pain can mean you are unable to work or enjoy everyday activities as you normally would, which can lead to anxiety, depression and drug dependence. You may also suffer from constant headaches, back pain and insomnia. The severity of symptoms and recovery times will vary from person to person, but anyone experiencing lasting pain should see a medical professional as soon as possible.
