Asbestos contamination signA devoted mother of three has sadly died after contracting mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer, after she was exposed to the deadly substance as a teenager. Penny Jane Garner, 46, was only exposed to a small amount of asbestos, either as a burst at one location, or in several locations across a few years which caused an accumulation of the substance.

Dr Simon Taggart, a lung cancer specialist said that this case of mesothelioma is one of the most unusual he has ever come across. He commented, “It’s unusual, but Penny is unusual. She died at 46 and her lungs were healthy. The average age of mesothelioma sufferers in Salford is upwards of 70 years old. This is the lightest dusting of exposure I have ever seen.”

Ms Garner may have been exposed to asbestos when she worked in a textiles factory as a seamstress in her late teens. Floor tiles, pipes and clothes presses in the factory could have potentially contained asbestos. Even though the exposure would have been minimal, it has had such a tragic effect on her life.

More than 4000 people are estimated to die each year as a result of occupational cancer due to exposure to asbestos. This can include both mesothelioma and lung cancer. 2535 people sadly passed away due to mesothelioma in 2012, and in 2013 there were a total of 2145 new cases of mesothelioma assessed for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB).
