A welder from Manchester has been awarded £500,000 in accident at work compensation. The 49 year old sustained severe injuries to his face when a metal jack collapsed and crushed his head. The accident left him needing five operations after his eye socket fractured. He is now left in agonising pain, and needs to wear a plastic mask when he goes outside to protect his face from wind and rain.

The accident happened when he was trying to weld two pieces of steel together. Although no definite fault was established with the jack, it was thought that it was unsafe to be used. The victim commented on his injuries saying “I will be in pain for the rest of my life. I don’t do anything like I used to. My family life has been ruined”. It is likely that the man will never be able to return to work.
