Falls from height can be extremely serious. Even if you fall from a relatively small height, nasty injuries can be incurred and therefore employers have a responsibility to ensure that their employees are provided with safe equipment and work environments.
Recently, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published a story about a business in Stockport which had admitted liability in an accident which resulted in an employee sustaining a fractured heel after falling from a ladder while installing cables for an alarm system. The worker had started to descend the ladder when it slipped. He jumped from it and sustained an injury which meant he was off work for six months. The Stockport business pleaded guilty at Macclesfield Magistrates’ Court to a breach of Regulation 4(1)(a) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005, in that it failed to properly plan work at height. HSE found no specific risk assessment and no procedure in place to ensure work at height was adequately planned. The dangers of working at height and ladder accidents
Did you know that falling from a height is the second most common cause of catastrophic or fatal injury after road traffic accidents? Even a fall from a relatively small height, as little as 2 feet, carries a risk of serious injury which could include complicated orthopedic, head or spinal injuries.
Alarmingly, HSE statistics show that falls from a height is the most common cause of fatal injury in the workplace, with 25 deaths recorded in 2012/13 and a further 2,522 people suffered serious injuries .
Don’t become a statistic! Ensure that your employer abides by the advice given on the HSE’s website, which explains what employers need to do to protect employees when they work at height – visit www.hse.gov.uk/work-at-height/
