September is National Forklift Safety Month, which aims to raise awareness of the dangers of forklift trucks in the workplace and encourages safer practices and measures to reduce forklift truck accidents and injuries.

The campaign was launched in 2008, but previously has only lasted for one week. This year, this has been extended to the whole month of September in the hope of further highlighting the dangers and ultimately reducing forklift truck accidents.

800 people were injured in accidents involving forklift trucks last year, a number which needs to reduce drastically. Shockingly, every 6 weeks someone in the UK sadly loses their life in a forklift truck accident. With forklift truck accidents causing serious, life changing injuries, it is vital that more is done to improve the safety of workers who use and work around forklift trucks.

This year’s campaign is about reducing dangers and dangerous practices in the workplace to prevent accidents. Many forklift truck accidents occur due to staff not following the correct procedures when using them. This can be due to a variety of reasons, including:

  • Copying other members of staff as it’s the ‘easier’ way of doing things.
  • Inheriting bad habits from older or more long-standing members of staff.
  • Not receiving the correct training to use a forklift truck or not being provided with the correct procedures to follow.

Younger staff can be afraid of speaking up about the dangerous use of forklift trucks, especially if they are surrounded by more experienced members of staff. So the message for this year’s National Forklift Safety Month is: “See danger… Speak up!”

By addressing dangerous behaviour and practices when they occur, you could prevent a serious, life threatening accident from happening. A shift in attitudes and behaviours of staff working with forklift trucks could drastically reduce the number of workers who lose their life, or are left with life changing injuries from these accidents.

Throughout September, the Forklift Truck Association will be sharing simple and affordable safety measures which can be applied easily across all workplaces where forklift trucks are used, regardless of size or number of employees.
