A fine of £250,000 has been given to a logistics company after a man fell to his death through a warehouse roof in Wythenshawe. Michael Sweet, 48, fell through a fragile panel in the warehouse roof when he was working cleaning out guttering.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that there were failings in health and safety measures at the warehouse. No risk assessment was completed for the work that was to be done, so the risks were not adequately accounted for and prevented. The accident could have been avoided had the risks been indentified and measures such as putting scaffolding up, covering the fragile area of the roof or using a safety harness had been put into place.
Working from height is always going to carry risks, so it is important that employers ensure that any measures that can be taken are implemented before any work is carried out. In the year 2012/13 falls from height made up 31% of all accidents at work, including 46 fatal accidents. The number of injuries caused from working at height is decreasing each year. However, the number of people killed by their injuries has stayed constant, showing the ever present need to protect workers when they are required to work at height.
Claiming Compensation after an Accident at Work
Accidents at work happen all too often, not only when people are required to work at height, but also in many other situations. Employers should always carry out a full risk assessment of any work that is required before allowing anyone to complete any work. They also owe a duty of care to employees, to make sure that they environment they are working in is safe and appropriate for the work to be carried out. If they fail in this duty, and you are injured as a result, you may be able to make a work accident compensation claim.
