A leisure centre in Essex has been fined following an accident at their facility where a 2 and a half year old boy was left with severe burns. The accident happened when the child slipped onto a drain when he was attending a swimming lesson at the facility. The drain had just been cleaned with a corrosive drain cleaner, which caused severe burns to the toddler’s bottom and thighs after it burnt through his swimming shorts and nappy.
The boy had to undergo a skin graft after being taken to hospital for emergency treatment. The leisure centre were fined after it was found they did not have a thorough record for cleaning the type of drain, and a lack of training on how to safely use the chemicals and fully assess the dangers. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Inspector commented saying “Leisure Centre operators have a duty to ensure that members of the public of all ages can enjoy their facilities safely. This includes putting the appropriate training and system of work in place to manage the risks of using cleaning chemicals”.
