Freeclaim Solicitors are urging everyone to get involved with road safety week and help make our roads safer.

Road Safety Week is a great initiative that runs from 17-23 November 2014 that aims to inspire thousands of communities, schools and organisations to take action on road safety during the week of the event and beyond.

Road Safety Week (RSW) is coordinated annually by Brake, the road safety charity that works to make streets and communities safer and prevent road deaths and injuries whilst offering support to victims of road crashes.  Founded in 1997, the fantastic initiative was founded to raise awareness about road safety and inspire people to create safer roads by promoting steps everyone can take to reduce deaths and injuries on our roads.

Any organisation, community or individual can get involved simply by making the famous Brake Pledge or going as far as taking part in a fundraising scheme. Children can also help spread the word by downloading some promotional material found in an online ‘Action Pack’ and educate their friends and family members just how the simple act of slowing down by a few miles per hour can save lives.

According to Brake, every 30 seconds someone, somewhere in the world, is killed in a road crash. With fatalities on the road totalling nearly 2000 in the UK in 2013 alone, initiatives like Brake and RSW are much needed reminders of how the public can help to reduce these numbers.

Fortunately their great work and general improvements in safety seem to be having an effect as gov.uk have reported a steady decline in the number of fatalities on our roads year on year. In fact the total number of people killed in 2013 was 39% lower than the 2005-09 baseline average.

Freeclaim personal injury solicitors welcome the results and are supporters of the safety drive. Sarah Moore, Serious Injuries Solicitor with experience in road traffic accidents commented, “Brake and Road Safety Week do a great job promoting safer roads in the UK for every type of road user, including cyclists, drivers and pedestrians. Although a decrease in road fatalities is a positive step in the right direction, we support any initiatives that can reduce this number even further.”

Freeclaim solicitors are urging people to take extra care on the road. The chances of survival after being hit by a car travelling at 20mph are 20% higher than when it is travelling at 30mph – a sobering thought. Shockingly, those hit by a car travelling at 40mph have a 90% chance of being killed. The message is clear; slow down.

So why not help save lives? Slow down and reduce road accidents
