The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) have released figures which show there has been an increase in the number of claims for hit and run accidents in the last 12 months. The MIB was set up to provide a fund out of which compensation could be paid to the victims of road traffic accidents caused by drivers who cannot be traced or do not have insurance.
There has been an increase in claims submitted to the MIB from a total of 12,884 in 2013 to a total of 13,483 in 2014.
In recent years, the MIB have concentrated their efforts in dealing with uninsured drivers on our roads. It is reported that an estimated 2.8% of all UK motorists drive without valid insurance.
Paul Ryman-Tubb, Head of Technical at the MIB commented; “We’ve spent a lot of effort in reducing the general problem of uninsured driving – and we’ve seen that halved in the last 10 years.”
“The number of claims we received where the driver leaves the scene of the accident has remained relatively static. Whilst it’s reduced slightly, it has increased in the last year and now represents around 60% of all the cases we see in that area.
“Some drivers who initially leave the scene of the accident and are later traced are uninsured… but that doesn’t account for the whole problem.”
