The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has rolled out its new MedCo initiative in an attempt to scare whiplash sufferers from claiming compensation.

The new initiative has been condemned as a scaremongering tactic by solicitors, who feel that this move will potentially stop victims from claiming compensation for fear that past information and history of injury will be used against them.

The Association of British Insurers would like to see claimant lawyers required to check the previous claims records of a potential client. Furthermore, the ABI has lobbied for a compulsory accreditation scheme for experts offering advice on whiplash to be rolled out.

This is with the aim of stopping legal firms from using their own medical expert teams to assess the extent of whiplash, forcing them to use those associated with MedCo – owned by the ABI.

MedCo will automatically add current experts to register but then remove them from the site after an unspecified amount of time if they do not pay the joining fees to gain the new accreditation, attempting to besmirch their name.

It is glaringly obvious that ABI have a vested interest in trying stop people from claiming for whiplash, accusing sufferers of making false claims and scaring them by attempting to bring unrelated past issues into light.

The ABI have tried to justify the move to the public, stating that this will spell good news for motorists as a reduction in claims will drive insurance premiums down, but solicitors are taking a different stance.

Emma Greenhalgh, Head of the Road Accident Department at Freeclaim Solicitors commented on these changes, “At Freeclaim we understand that whiplash can be a complex medical condition. We believe it is important that our clients see a medical expert who has the specialist knowledge to deal with their injuries individually.
