The Road Safety Minister has announced a new poster campaign to increase awareness of cycling safety after a worrying rise in the number of cyclists killed in the UK. In 2012, the number of deaths from cycling accidents were 118, an increase from the previous year of 107.
The campaign will promote cycling safety to drivers in five cities, including Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham and Cambridge. The road safety Minister commented, “This campaign aims to make motorists aware of the need to look out for cyclists, ensuring they take extra care when turning at junctions for example, and encourages cyclists to think about the dangers that they could be unaware of when they are riding”.
The key messages focus on the four safety advice tips:
- Drivers look out (for cyclists) when getting out.
- Cyclists, ride a door’s width from parked cars
- Drivers, look out for cyclists at junctions
- Cyclists, ride central on narrow roads
