A man who was seriously injured after an accident in Afghanistan has successfully claimed armed forces compensation from the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Thomas Birch was a lance corperal in Helmand when the Land Rover he was driving veered off a cliff and fell 100ft. Mr Birch brought a claim against the MoD as he believed the vehicle he was driving had a fault, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle. He had also been allowed to drive the vehicle without a military permit or license. Initially, the claim was dismissed by the High Court, however, following an appeal the decision was overturned and Mr Birch has been granted compensation in an undisclosed amount.
