Racecourses across England may need a review of safety measures after a jockey has successfully claimed compensation after falling from his horse and fracturing his pelvis.

Phillip Hide was thrown from his horse when he was about to jump a hurdle, and his hip hit part of the outer rail of the track. It was argued that the hurdle and rail were too close and that the rail was not adequately padded. Mr. Hide commented, “I don’t remember anything about the accident because I had a head injury as well. My parents were warned that it could be bad. Every time I was made to look back at the films, I realised it wouldn’t have taken much more to have changed everything for my family and I truly appreciate my good fortune.” He received £58,000 after taking his sports injury claim to the court of appeal.
