A recent Freedom of Information request by the Tax Payer’s Alliance has shown that councils across Greater Manchester have paid out over £12m in compensation over the last 2 years. These claims have been put forward by residents in council owned properties, employees of the council and also businesses.
Manchester council itself paid out the second highest amount of compensation in the country at £5m, with only Lambeth in London paying out more at £5.2m.
Compensation claims included people who had tripped on unsafe pavements and roads, damages which occurred as a result of potholes, as well as accident at work claims and industrial illness. A total of 807 claims were successful in Manchester, with many more claims across Wigan, Tameside, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport and Trafford. Bolton and Salford council refused to release the figures in relation to claims in their areas.
Around £1.3m was paid out to council workers who sustained injury whilst at work, and a further £1.3m was paid out to people who had sustained injury as a result of a slip, trip or fall.
Clearly these figures show that more needs to be done by councils to keep people safe. It is unacceptable that so many people have been injured and been put in a position where they have to claim compensation for their injuries.
Reducing accidents in Greater Manchester
Jonathan Isaby, Chief Executive of the Tax Payer’s Alliance, commented; “Some of the payments made by councils will be entirely justified, as the most serious accidents can change lives. But in many cases, local authorities and their staff will be failing to live up to the standards required of them by law. Councils must do everything they can to ensure their mistakes and negligence don’t result in such large bills for hard-pressed taxpayers.”
Nicola Hughes, Senior Associate Solicitor and Head of Personal Injury at Freeclaim Solicitors commented; “Councils should be doing more to keep people safe, whether that’s whilst they are at work, properly maintaining council owned property, or adequate upkeep of our pathways and roads. Securing serious injury compensation is just one of the ways in which we help our clients after an accident. At Freeclaim Solicitors, we are committed to helping clients get the early treatment and rehabilitation they need to ensure a better and quicker recovery.”
