The police do a difficult job and sometimes individual officers exceed their powers and sometimes lose control. Where claims are then made against the police for alleged assault, wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and malicious prosecution, the police have a tendency to defend these claims unless the evidence is so overwhelming, such as CCTV footage. Civil claims against the police help act as a check and balance against alleged misuse of powers. These are difficult claims and require courage and determination to fight them.
