Repetitive Strain Injury Compensation

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) describes a range of work related upper limb painful conditions, including tenderness and throbbing of the muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. Repetitive strain injury claims are amongst the most common work injury compensation claims. These injuries can also be referred to as work-related upper limb disorder or non-specific upper limb pain. They mostly affect hands and arms, including wrists, elbows and forearms, as well the neck and shoulders.

About Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

Common RSI conditions include: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), Occupational Overuse Syndrome, Work Related Upper Limb Injury Syndrome (WRULS) or Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD).

Repetitive strain injury, or RSI, refers to painful injuries caused by repetitive use of part of the body, awkward movements within the upper body or it can also be caused by holding an uncomfortable position for a long time. These repetitive movements and/or positions cause injury to muscles, tendons and other soft tissue. The more common employees that are affected by repetitive strain injury include office workers, carpenters, painters, factory workers, cooks, drivers and road maintenance staff.

They often occur in workers who spend a lot of time at computers typing, as well as those that carry out repetitive manual work. Doing a repetitive activity for a long period of time without a rest, having bad posture or having to work in an awkward position, stress and cold temperatures can all make repetitive strain injury worse.

Despite being a common problem, many employers do not do enough to prevent their employees from contracting RSI. All employers have a legal duty to ensure their employees’ health and safety at work. A full risk assessment should be carried out to decrease the risk of injuries occurring and employers should also make sure that any symptoms that do appear do not get progressively worse. They should ensure that any workplace is suitable and comfortable for employees.
