The Dangers Of Wearing Headphones
Tue 24th Jan 12 - 14:31
Researchers have found a huge rise in personal injuries due to pedestrians wearing headphones - in particular, young males. Research from the US analysed pedestrian injuries data from 2004 - 2011 showed that the number of fatal or serious accidents had tripled, with 70% resulting in death. The study also found that 2 out of every 3 accident victims were young males.
The researchers commented on the study, "The use of headphones with handheld devices may pose a safety risk to pedestrians, especially in environments with moving vehicles. Further research is needed to determine if and how headphone use compromises pedestrian safety."
There have been many studies over the years that have shown that the use of headphones or mobile phone pieces cause people to become distracted and respond less to their environment around them such as traffic noise and horns when they are crossing the road.
