Roofer Injured After Fall At School
Mon 22nd Aug 11 - 15:24
Mr. Chris Buck seriously injured his back after a horrific accident at work when he fall from a school roof in Stockport. He was employed by Ploughcroft Building Services whilst trying to make the roof of a secondary school waterproof. He tripped on cables on the roof and fell through a skylight nearly three metres to the floor below.
Mr. Buck, who suffered serious injury to his back and neck and has still not been able to return to work, commented, "I had a very lucky escape and I don't like to think about what might have happened. I could have quite easily have landed on me head or on children below which could have led to serious injuries."
"Due to the accident I now have to consider other careers. My confidence to do this job again is not there any more and I feel I would be frightened and scared to get on a roof or even climb a ladder."
Ploughcroft Building Services had failed to use a cover or barrier on the fragile skylight, despite being told to do so in a health and safety report six weeks earlier. The HSE (Health & Safety Executive) have fined the building firm £10,000 and ordered them to pay costs after they pleased guilty to breaking work at height regulations.
According to the HSE, more than 4000 employees have suffered serious injuries as a result of a fall from height at work. Unfortunately, some falls from height in the workplace can be fatal.
