Pensioner receives substantial compensation after serious fall
Tue 30th Jun 09 - 15:48

A local council has paid Joan Heppenstall, 75, considerable accident compensation after she fell on one of its pavements, although the exact details of the compensation award have not been disclosed.

The tripping accident happened over two years ago and she is still undergoing treatment. Joan Heppenstall tripped on a paving slab that was raised on a footpath on her way home back in 2007.

She suffered serious facial injuries in the fall; her jaw hit the floor, smashing her dental bridge, breaking some teeth and chipping others. At the time, she was also caring for her terminally ill husband John.

The council had failed to maintain and repair the pavement which caused the fall. They admitted liability and settled the compensation claim out of court for an undisclosed sum. She commented afterwards, "I'm relieved my case has been settled. The money will help to pay for my new bridge and the other dental treatment I have received. I just wish the accident hadn't happened in the first place."
