Mesothelioma Compensation Award
Tue 4th Aug 09 - 12:16
A man from Bristol who was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer, after years of asbestos exposure has been awarded £70,000 in accident compensation.
Cornelius Doherty, 76, worked in the flooring industry diagnosed with mesothelioma a year ago. The 76-year-old worked as a floor layer and had been exposed to asbestos without knowing the dangers of the material and without any protection. Unfortunately last year, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and told he probably had only 18 months to live. He decided to pursue a claim for compensation to help cover his care costs.
Mr. Doherty commented, "This disease has completely changed my life. It has got gradually worse and my chest has gradually tightened up. I am on stronger tablets now. My breathing has gone and now if I walk and talk, it takes it out of me. I can only walk short distances now."
He further said: "Asbestos was there but we did not know the damage it could do. Some of the apprentices used to make snowballs out of it. No-one knew it could harm us. We would not have done it if we had."
The case has now settled out of court and the flooring firm has agreed to pay Mr. Doherty £70,000 in compensation, although they have not admitted liability.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that can develop in the lungs or abdomen. The majority of mesothelioma cases are pleural mesothelioma - in the lungs.
