Man awarded compensation after slipping outside Tesco
Tue 3rd Feb 09 - 17:09

A cash machine maintenance worker who was injured in a fall outside a Tesco supermarket has been awarded over £10,000 in accident compensation.

The unnamed accident victim was working for Group 4 at the time and slipped on a pavement and fell outside the supermarket. The accident occurred because the pavement had been coated in slime caused by a nearby sewer that had overflowed.

The 62 year old man had to take four months off work after sustaining hip and spine injuries and tearing the cartilage in his knee.

Although Tesco had been aware of the danger, signs were not put up to warn customers and contractors on site of the danger of slipping. After admitting liability, Tesco settled out of court and the cash machine worker received £10,500 in accident compensation.

Anyone who is responsible for the running or maintaining of a public place, such as a supermarket, is obliged to make that place safe and to protect people from injuries that are reasonably foreseeable.

If you've been injured in a trip, slip or fall in a supermarket, shop, business, hotel or other public place, because of the negligence of the occupier, you may be entitled to accident compensation.
