A man who was seriously injured in a scaffolding accident has had his workplace injury claim settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

Mr. Cording was injured in an accident at work whilst he was moving scaffolding poles at a Power Station when a pallet with 20 scaffolding poles collapsed and trapped him. The firm later admitted that pallet was significantly below the industry standard and therefore unsuitable for the job.

He suffered crush injuries to his right leg and permanent nerve damage. Even after surgery and ongoing rehabilitation, the injuries mean that he will be on painkillers for the rest of his life and he still cannot feel anything in his right foot and part of his left leg.

Due to the injuries he received he has been unable to return to his previous job and has therefore retrained as a welder.

A recent report by the South West Public Health Observatory (SWPHO) shows comparisons of accidents and injuries across England and highlights regional variances, but also highlights the harrowing facts that there are nearly 11,000 fatal accidents each year which could be preventable.

The report based on statistics from 2008 - 2010 shows that nearly 11,000 people have died as a result of accidental injuries, of which there are nearly 3,300 fatal falls and 2,000 land transport fatal accidents. The report also shows large variations in the number of hospital admissions and deaths as a result of an accident across different authorities in England.

The report revealed that Melton in Leicestershire had the highest rate of accident deaths at 29 deaths per 100,000, whereas Runnymede in Surry had the lowest rate at 5.5 deaths per 100,000 people.  The figures also highlighted admissions for alcohol-attributable injuries at 167,000 in 2010/11 compared to over 51,500 admissions due injuries caused by falls from height.

SWPHO Director Dr Julia Verne commented "Years of life lost due to injuries are high. There are close to 11,000 deaths from injury each year. Most of these are preventable, making injuries a serious public health concern. Injuries don't often make the headlines and are consequently something of a ‘hidden' public health issue. This needs to change. We know that they disproportionately affect the young, the old and the least well off".

"The Injury Profiles mean that we can map variation and start asking serious questions about why these differences exist. Possible explanations are social and economic differences between areas, or differences in injury prevention efforts and access to NHS and care services. There may also be differences in the way injury information is recorded."

A shopper injured in an accident whilst shopping will receive compensation from one of the large supermarket chains.

The shopper, an elderly lady suffered personal injuries when she was hit by a pallet truck in the supermarket. The accident happened whilst she was out shopping with her husband, when a pallet truck being pulled by an employee crashed into her scraping her shins, leaving ‘flaps of skin' torn and loose.

The local Council found the supermarket guilty of failing to protect customers from injury and they received a fine of £20,000 and ordered to pay £24,500 in court costs.

Whilst in court, the injured shopper read a statement and said the pain she had experienced was the worse she had ever felt.

A cyclist has been successful in her bid for compensation after she suffered severe personal injuries in a road accident.

Ms Glennon suffered serious injuries when she was knocked down by a car. The motorist was 89 at the time and had poor eyesight which did not pass the legal requirements. Ms Glennon sustained serious spinal injuries and she is now in a wheelchair following the accident.

A British Court has ordered Elyzea, a Belgian Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, to pay a woman £100,000 in compensation after her face lift went wrong.

Despite trying re-corrective surgery with the same plastic surgeon, she has still been left with damage to her lip, facial nerves and skin and left her with scarring and a ‘lopsided' look to her face.

Although she had the operation in Belgium, the company has two consultation offices here in the UK and it was in the London office that she signed the contract with the company for her face lift procedure.

The Court had already ruled that Elyzea were negligent and in the latest hearing, she has been awarded £100,000 in cosmetic surgery compensation.

A man who suffered a serious accident at work has been awarded £175,000 in workplace accident compensation.  

At the time, Mr. Riley who worked for Enviro Skips Limited, was delivering a skip when it fell and crushed his right hand causing serious personal injury.

A 53 year old man has been awarded £3,500 injury compensation after he choked on a rubber mould in a crisp packet.

A 60 year old lady has been awarded £750,000 in damages after a serious car crash.

Mrs Patel suffered serious brain injuries when a truck went out of control and careered into her in a fatal multiple vehicle pile up. She suffered multiple fractures and serious brain injuries and was rushed to hospital in an air ambulance.

A biker is seeking compensation after being paralysed following a horrific collision with a bus.

A woman who suffered catastrophic brain injuries after she was hit by a police car when crossing a road has won her compensation battle.

Initially, Rebecca Smith, who suffered severe injuries as a result of the collision, was found 75% to blame for the accident. However at the Court of Appeal in London, Judges ruled that the policeman was two thirds to blame and therefore Rebecca's accident compensation award will be on this basis.

The incident happened when a police car whilst responding to an emergency, hit Rebecca as she was crossing the road, resulting in her being found unconscious on the roof of the police car with a fractured skull and very serious head injuries. .

The policeman at the time had a clean record and was an advanced police driver, however, Lord Justice Ward commented, "The driver was negligent in travelling at a speed between 45-50 mph through the traffic light controlled junction with Carrington Street and into the section of Canal Street where the collision occurred."

He did rule however that Rebecca Smith should bear some responsibility as she failed to see the police car and crossed the road when it was unsafe to do so.

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have prosecuted the owner of a fairground after an accident on one of his rides.

A 12 year old girl was on the fairground ride called ‘Tagada' when she fell through the barrier gate and suffered a serious injury to her leg. She received a 7cm long cut on her shinbone and still has a scar. Due to the fairground accident, she also now suffers from a fear of fairground rides and will not take part in sports in case she receives a bang to her affected leg.

The investigators from the HSE found that the ride was faulty and discovered that a horizontal rail in the barrier gate had been missing for months which caused the young girl to fall through the gap. The HSE inspector commented, "Fairground operators must inspect rides for faults every day before allowing people to use them. In this case, the gap in the gate had been there for several months before the incident, so the ride had clearly not been checked properly during this time, which there simply is no excuse for. "

The fairground owner pleaded guilty to a beach of regulations and was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,000.

A little girl has been awarded nearly £5m after she suffered catastrophic injuries after a horrific head on collision.

Cerys Edwards, who was just 11 months at the time of the road accident, suffered severe spinal and brain injuries. She requires 24 hour specialist care after being left paralysed, unable to speak, dependant on a ventilator to breathe and a tube to feed. In addition to the damages, annual payments of £450,000 are also to be made to cover the cost of her long term care.

A speeding driver hit the family's car head on in the serious collision. The driver was just 19 at the time and thought to be travelling over 70mph in a 30mph zone. The driver was found guilty of dangerous driving, but only served 6 months of his 21 month sentence.

Judge McKenna commented at the hearing, "I've had the misfortune to deal with a number of cases with serious injuries but I think this is one of the saddest cases I've come across."

A boat building firm has been fined over £26,000 by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) after one of their workers suffered multiple fractures in an accident at work.

The 59 year old worker was knocked off some steps when a scissor lift nearby hit a shelf and dislodged a piece of timber that knocked him off the steps. The boat builders were closing down their factory at the time to move to new premises.

The worker suffered serious personal injuries, fracturing his leg in four places and leading to him being off work for ten months.  He can no longer lead an active lifestyle and cannot stand for long periods. Doctors have also warned him that there is a strong likelihood he will suffer severe arthritis.

The investigation by the HSE found that the company had a dangerous lack of planning, organization and control of the work being carried out to close the factory down. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted the company for a dangerous lack of planning, organisation and control of the work when closing the factory down. The HSE commented, "This case should highlight the importance of effective health and safety management."

A 70 year old lady who tripped on a door mat at the entrance to a café has been awarded £75,000 in tripping accident compensation.

The lady suffered a dislocated shoulder, a broken bone in her shoulder and seriously injured her knee from the fall. She has said that she is still not properly recovered and still suffers with everyday activities such as climbing the stairs and sitting down.

Recent figures report that over £12m work accident compensation has been paid to police forces in England and Wales over the last six years. It is thought that the final figure will be higher as some forces failed to provide figures on time following a freedom of information request.

Out of the regional forces, Greater Manchester Police had the greatest reported compensation payouts at £2.58m, with Hertfordshire Police next at £1.2m and West Midlands Police reportedly paying out the third highest at £1.1m.

Individual accident at work compensation payouts ranged from £14,000 awarded to a sergeant who suffered tinnitus caused by a buzzer in the cells to £550,000 the largest compensation award paid to a civilian police employee who slipped on ice in a car park.

Researchers have found a huge rise in personal injuries due to pedestrians wearing headphones - in particular, young males. Research from the US analysed pedestrian injuries data from 2004 - 2011 showed that the number of fatal or serious accidents had tripled, with 70% resulting in death. The study also found that 2 out of every 3 accident victims were young males.

The researchers commented on the study, "The use of headphones with handheld devices may pose a safety risk to pedestrians, especially in environments with moving vehicles. Further research is needed to determine if and how headphone use compromises pedestrian safety."
